EMS Education Coordinator



Active Iowa EMT certification (or higher) with EMS Instructor Endorsement.

Bachelor’s Degree preferred or working towards completion of Bachelor’s Degree within one year of hire date.

Five years of field experience in EMS and five years of education experience

Must hold a current AHA course completion at the level of BLS Instructor, Training Center Faculty, or Regional Faculty

Position Responsibilities:

  • Develop the policies, schedule and organizational structure of the EMR/EMT/AEMT programs, adjusting as needed.
  • Interviews, hires, and supervises faculty for EMS programs.
  • Counsel and collaborate regularly with faculty, to ensure the program is meeting objectives and goals.
  • Make changes in program structure, policies, faculty and schedule as needed to assure the program goals and objectives are met.
  • Issue disciplinary action to faculty and students, as needed in conjunction with the Medical Director and Director of the program.
  • Regularly evaluates the effectiveness of the programs by review of student certification results, test exam results, clinical evaluations, and other aspects in cooperation with the medical director and program faculty.
  • Supervises and approves the development of course descriptions and course objectives.
  • Supervises and approves the development of assessment tools for both didactic/cognitive and laboratory education, ensuring that all objectives are measurable and relevant.
  • Regularly evaluates the education processes in the classroom, laboratory and clinical settings through Adjunct Feedback and evaluations.
  • Serve as EMS program director/liaison for State and accreditation purposes and attend all state coordinator meetings.
  • Communicate EMS updates/changes to faculty, deans and preceptors.
  • Coordinate ongoing efforts to maintain State Authorization as a training center and earn and maintain national accreditation (CoAEMSP/CAAHEP) status: maintaining all required documentation of criteria compliance.
  • Meet on an on-going basis with the paramedic faculty (didactic, lab and clinical) to ensure the delegated responsibilities are adequately meeting the program’s needs.
  • Supervise the Clinical Scheduling and monitor the student’s clinical experience.
  • Communicate with the Clinical Coordinator to monitor the student’s clinical experience.
  • Supervise clinical and field sites, conducting clinical site visits as needed in conjunction with the Clinical Coordinator.
  • Coordinate National Registry Practical Examinations.
  • Coordinate orientation for all preceptors in the field, documenting as needed.
  • Provide training and orientation of all faculty and documenting continuing education for all faculty.
  • Supervise and approve development of the syllabus and lesson plans for each course.
  • Review all test item analysis, making changes as needed. Support faculty in completing test analysis for their courses
  • Work with the Center for Nursing and Allied Health Education scheduler to coordinate use of space for EMS training programs.
  • Schedule local and Area Outreach EMT classes
  • Work with instructors and clinical coordinator to assure all courses are appropriately planned and evaluated to facilitate ongoing development of the program.
  • Coordinate review of student files & learning progress with medical director.
  • Provide leadership for continuous quality review and improvement of the educational program, via student outcomes, test results, certification rates, preceptor evaluations, progression of student leadership skills and affective domain scores and medical director student assessments.
  • Coordinate the review of education content, progression of students, and other aspects of the program with Medical Director to assure compliance and delivery of course content.
  • Reports progression of students, student outcomes, and other aspects of the program to the EMS Advisory Board at least annually.
  • Assures all faculty hold valid and current EMS certification while teaching at IWCC, and all lead instructors hold current EMS Instructor endorsement in the state of Iowa.
  • Assures all local, state and national requirements are met and maintained by completing reports in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate annual advisory board meetings to maintain dialogue in the community and with our clinical sites.
  • Coordinates monthly meeting with the Medical Director to discuss and document efforts to provide optimal education to IWCC students.
  • Actively participate in all faculty developmental training efforts offered by IWCC.
  • Participate in marketing efforts for all EMS programs.
  • Review and approve CEU requests, and process paperwork from approved CEU classes.
  • Communicate expectations with the various departments regarding Continuing education.
  • Provide EMS continuing education classes regularly, as needed by the EMS services in our region.
  • Coordinate the overall direction of the AHA Cardiac Training Center (CTC) program.
  • Interviews, hires, and supervises faculty for AHA CTC.
  • Act as liaison for Iowa Western Community College with the other CTCs in Iowa
  • Conduct necessary programs pertaining to the operation of the CTC.
  • Oversee and enforce the guidelines set forth by the American Heart Association
  • Attend any and all meetings pertaining to the CTC programs and Iowa Western Community College.
  • Assist in setting up classes for outside businesses and groups, as needed.
  • Maintaining any and all documents and files pertaining to the CTC.
  • Order any and all material pertaining to the operation of the training center as necessary.
  • Provide direction and leadership to the AHA Instructors that are aligned with IWCC
  • Communicate changes in AHA Guidelines to the CPR Instructors

  • Must be able to work independently, accept responsibility with limited supervision, manage multiple tasks to completion, and work with frequent interruptions.
  • Must have strong organization skills and attention to detail.
  • Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Be able to establish and maintain relationships within the area and state EMS departments and educational facilities.
