Supervising in Long-Term Care Facilities
About the Program
This course is designed to provide the knowledge and skills needed to successfully manage resident care and personnel in the healthcare facility. The course participant will examine selected management problems, discuss related basic theory and principles and apply these to solving management problems. Healthcare facilities as organizations, management tasks and skills, leadership qualities and appreciation of the individual needs of resident and staff members will be discussed throughout the course.
3.6 CEU’s for Iowa Nurses and 36 Contact Hours for Nebraska Nurses for 100% attendance. (Participants must be present for 80% of the course and additional written assignments will be given for any time absent)
Program to Include
- Operation, organization structure and communication systems used in healthcare facilities
- Management goals and tasks and the LPN’s role and responsibilities as managers of health care in healthcare facilities
- Leadership qualities that will assist the LPN supervisor in the healthcare facility to achieve goals
- Recognizing individual needs of residents and staff members
Must be an LPN in long-term care with 6 months of employment.
Iowa Administrative Code 655 6.5(1)b.(2) permits the licensed practical nurse working under the supervision of the registered nurse, to supervise in a nursing facility. The licensed practical nurse who is employed to supervise must complete a course specifically designed for the supervisory role of the LPN in long-term care within six months of employment. A licensed practical nurse is entitled to supervise without the educational requirement outlined above if the licensed practical nurse was performing in a supervisory role on or before October 6, 1982. Licensed practical nurses who are enrolled full-time in a registered nurse program are not exempt from the course. However, an LPN who is a full-time student in an RN program and/or who is scheduled to graduate within one year may request a waiver by writing to the board office. The request for a waiver must state the number of credit hours to be taken each semester and include the student’s expected date of graduation. Individuals who do not graduate from the RN program as scheduled or who are not successful on the RN-NCLEX must take the next available course.
