Emergency Response Training Exercise
Submitted by: Tom Johnson
Iowa Western Community College in connection with the Council Bluffs Police Department will be conducting two (2) emergency response training exercises on the Council Bluffs campus May 19, 2008 from 8 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The two (2) exercises will be:
1. an active shooter scenario
2. bomb extraction from a vehicle
The active shooter scenario will involve an officer acting as an armed gunman on campus in a classroom building with a significant number of students/staff present in the area. This exercise will allow Council Bluffs police and other emergency response personnel to train/practice their repsonse to such a situation.
The bomb extraction exercise will reenact a situation where the Council Bluffs police have been notified of a bomb in a vehicle located in a college parking lot and will allow them to practice evacuation and extraction procedures.
By hosting this opportunity, IWCC will be able to practice its institutional response and handling of these emergency situations. Through practice exercises we can identify areas within the emergency response plan that can be improved upon which will lead to a safer and more secure environment for both students and staff.
The college is providing this advance notice to both employees and students in order that everyone will understand this is a training exercise and not an actual emergency situation. The Administration will continue to send out additional communication over the next ten (10) days and will post many signs around campus the day of the exercise.

Why Should I give Blood? Blood is a special gift that each of us holds. By sharing it, you can give someone another chance at life! 97% is the chance that you or someone in your family will need blood someday, and, by making a commitment to blood donation, you could be the one who ensures it is available.
Did you know? Here in the Metro area, the Mid American division must collect more than 54,000 units of blood each month to meet patient need. Only 37% of the population is eligible to donate, of this 37% only 5% donates blood. Please make a difference by being one of those who are helping to increase blood donations and save lives

Congrats to the Reiver Softball Team – Back to Back Region XI Champions! The Reiver’s (49-11) advance to the District Championship vs. Crowder College (51-8) at Neosho, MO in a best of three series May 7 & 8. The winner will advance to the NJCAA National Tournament held in Plant City, FL.
Baseball
The Iowa Western baseball team wrapped up regular season play by sweeping Southwestern over the weekend. The Reiver’s, # 9 in the NJCAA Poll are 47-9 and 15-1 in conference. They enter the Region XI Championship Tournament as the # 1 seed May 10, 11 & 12 at Indian Hills. The winner will advance to the District Championship.
Men and Women’s Golf
Andrea Richter and Candace Harless finished in the top-10 at the Region XI Championship and qualified for the NJCAA National Championship. The Lady Reiver’s had to battle more than just the golf course during the championship. During the first round the women battled 20 mph winds and snow, and during the second round the temps dipped down into the teens during the round. After starting the second round in 11th place, Andrea Richter came back with the fourth best round of the day and finished in a tie for 7th at 177. Harless finished one shot behind Richter at 178, which was good enough for 9th. Finishing just outside of the qualifying number were sophomores Katelyn Dingeman and Kristine Kueny. Katelyn finished 11th at 183, just two shots out of a tie for 10th. Kueny was just one spot and one stroke behind her. The final Reiver was Emily Witthoft, who fired rounds of 93 and 94 to finish 16th. "It was a bitter sweet day for me," quoted Coach Shives, “I'm very excited for Andrea and Candace. They have worked hard to reach this point, but so have the other ladies. It has been a real pleasure to watch Katleyn and Kristine grows as golfers.” Richter and Harless will be competing May 12-15th at the Legends Course at the LPGA International in Daytona Beach, FL. This will be the third straight year; the Reiver’s have been represented at the Championship.
Men and Women’s Track & Field
It was another wet, cold and windy day in Pella, Iowa. The town was full of people celebrating the Tulip Festival. Despite the terrible weather many of the Reiver’s stepped up and had great performances. David Barmasai led the men's team with a 9:11.32 in the 3000m Steeple Chase event. This officially ranks David #1 in the nation in this event. Wesley Williams ran a 10.86 in the 100m. dash which also qualifies him for nationals in this event. The men's 4x100m had their fastest time of the year and looking forward in going head to head with Iowa Central at the Region XI Championships. The women's team was lead by Kathryn Lech in the 3000m. Steeple and Gladys Serem in the 5000m. Kathryn placed 1st with her personal best of 12:58 which gets her very close to qualifying. Gladys won the 5000m. The women's 4x100m had their personal best and are still looking to qualify for nationals by winning the region. Chelsie Dailey won the women's Long Jump. The inaugural season for Iowa Western Track & Field has come to a close. The Reiver’s will get a chance to finally perform at home for the Region XI Championships which will be held at Iowa Western Community College. We would like to invite you to join us for the Region XI Championships that will be hosted on May 8, 9, and 10 at the Iowa Western Track & Field Complex; schedule will be posted on line at www.iwcc.edu
