About the Program
Looking for a challenging, yet highly rewarding career? Turn to Iowa Western’s Pre-Biotechnology and Molecular Biology study program for a shot at becoming an entry-level laboratory technician in research and/or biotechnology labs. Included in this program is the study of recombinant DNA in conjunction with biology, chemistry, and lab courses. Other areas of concentration include:

You can earn an Associate of Science degree after being immersed in a program emphasizing molecular and cellular biology while using the latest biotechnology equipment. You’ll master PCR technology and gel electrophoresis and collaborate with local industries for the best understanding of basic information about the career fields.
Iowa Western’s facilities and equipment match up against many large four-year institutions. You’ll be prepared to become a highly-skilled technician who can support the diverse and expanding medical, bioscience, agrichemical, and pharmaceutical research and production industries.
This program is designed for students intending to transfer to a four-year institution upon completion of this two-year degree. As a microbiologist, you would be responsible for investigating the growth and characteristics of microscopic organisms, such as bacteria, algae, and fungi. Microbiologists may work in government or private industry as research assistants in laboratories, hospitals, and pharmaceutical companies. In general, a minimum of a bachelor’s degree is necessary to find employment in the field. Advanced degrees such as a master’s degree or Ph.D are necessary to be considered for certain research positions.
