About the Program
If you enjoy science and are particularly interested in pursuing employment in any of the bio-processing industries, you will like working in the field of biotechnology as a technician. Biotechnology technicians are in demand world-wide. Iowa Western’s Pre-Biotechnology Technician program will prepare you for transfer to a four-year program of study. You will benefit from small classes, caring instructors, and will receive personal attention in lectures and labs.
This program is designed for students intending to transfer on to a four-year institution upon completion of this two-year degree. Biotechnology technicians work in research and development as well as production and quality control for pharmaceutical and manufacturing plants. According to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor and Statistics, biotechnology is among the most active fields. Science technician positions tend to be filled by graduates of technical institutes or community colleges who have completed college courses in chemistry, biology, mathematics, and engineering. Some management positions are filled by experienced production workers although they are generally filled by individuals with a bachelor’s degree. Pharmaceutical and medical manufacturing positions are expected to increase through 2016 and they will be two of the fastest growing manufacturing industries. Biotechnology technicians are becoming increasingly important in the food manufacturing industry.
