Grain Bin Rescue*

This course is designed to raise awareness about bin-rescue procedures and equipment, will provide extensive hands-on training. Participants will gain experience working in grain bins and using technical rescue equipment, such as ropes, harnesses, carabineers, mechanical-advantage systems, anchoragepoints, cofferdams, breathing apparatus, tripods, etc.

They will experience first hand an actual engulfment and the pressures involved on their body. Participants will get their hands dirty. “Personal Protective Equipment Requirements Apply”

Hybrid Vehicle Extrication

Emergency personnel will be educated on the unique dangers surrounding these vehicles and how to minimize the risk to both themselves and victims. From an in-depth look at the technology in hybrids to response procedures, this training covers everything needed to operate safely and effectively around these vehicles. No gear required..

Combine Extrication*

Combine Rescue will include a demonstration on how a combine works as well as how a victim becomes entrapped in the combine. The hands on portion of the program will deal with trauma patient care, auger entanglements, cribbing, and extrication tools. “Personal Protective Equipment Requirements Apply”

Fire Origin, Cause & Investigation

The class will examine the basics of fire cause determination to include but not limited to, the determination of the area and point of origin classifications of cause, legal responsibilities and duties of the fire department in the determination of cause and fire fatality investigations. Significant time will be spent discussing incendiary fires, the motives of the arsonist and the role that fire fighters play in a good arson investigation. No gear required.

Forcible Entry 101

This program is designed to give firefighters the knowledge and skills to perform all facets of forcible entry techniques. Officers and firefighters alike need to have the knowledge and skills necessary to rapidly size-up a door and decide the appropriate method to use when making entry. Full turnout gear with Safety Glasses is required.

Tractor Rollover Extrication*

The tractor rollover extrication training program will give the student a indepth look at how tractors roll over and new safety devices that help stabilize a tractor including Roll-Over Protection Systems (ROPS). The hands on portionof the program will deal with trauma patient care, cribbing, extrication tools. Students will gain knowledge on how to safely conduct a tractor rollover incident.

Introduction to Public Safety Diving

This course will teach the basics of Water Rescue. To help departments prepare for water rescue and recovery emergencies. Acting correctly in a timely manner will help lower accidents and unsuccessful searches and possibly save a life. Attendees will be trained in Basic water rescue for the first responder. Dress Drills, Call Organization, and running Scenarios. Rescue scenarios will be set
up at Lake Manawa and evaluated. Topics to be covered: Physiology of Drowning, Scene Safety and Security, Types of Equipment and uses, Tendering, First Aid & Dive emergencies, Incident Command. Equipment Required: PFD, Harness, Exposure suit (wet or dry) Gloves, Swim Suit. Harness and carabineer if available, staff will provide equipment for those attendees whom donot have it.

Rope Rescue Technician I

The class will provide training in rope rescue focusing on both high and low angle techniques. A majority of the class will be dedicated to actual hands-on training utilizing the South Western Iowa Regional Training Tower. Satisfactory class completion will result in a Rope Tech 1 certification. The participants should wear high top shoes with good gripping soles, clothing to match the weather, gloves, and a rescue style helmet or a fire helmet. In addition to the Fire School registration fee, participants must pay a $35.00 book and materials fee at the time of registration.

Wildland Fire Operations

Skills Crosswalk (Crosswalk) identifies critical wildland fire in their jurisdiction, or when working with state and federal wildland firefighter agencies. The Crosswalk identifies wildland skills and knowledge not incorporated within standard structural firefighting training. By incorporating a structural firefighter’s existing fire suppression knowledge and skills, use of Crosswalk reduces required classroom hours, minimizes curriculum redundancies, and makes efficient use of limited training hours. PPE needed: boots, leather gloves and a structural or wildland helmet.

Essentials of Firefighting

The subjects covered will prepare you to participate actively and safely on the fire ground under the supervision of more experienced firefighters. Subjects covered will include; firefighter safety, personnel protective equipment, SCBA, hose rolls and hose handling, fire behavior, fire stream application, search and rescue techniques, ladders, and ropes and knots in the fire service. Full turnout gear and an SCBA are required. Most of this class is hands-on. Sports Related Injuries

Participants will discuss the basic management of sports related injuries/ emergencies with a focus on assessment and the importance of fundamental management.

Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training

Subjects that are covered include: explanation of legal issues, Iowa law regarding adult/child abuse and neglect, identification factors that indicate adult/child abuse which may have occurred, reporting procedures: how, where and when to report, suspected adult/child abuse, how to recognize forms of
adult and child abuse, explain the purpose of abuse reporting, investigation and registry, basic techniques for identification of suspected abuse, and identify basic techniques for reporting suspected abuse.

Trauma Patients

This course teaches you how to be prepared to handle trauma patients in the prehospital environment and will help you to identify mechanisms of injury, interpret signs and symptoms, understand pathophysiology, recognize lifethreatening injuries, and hone your assessment skills to perform appropriate interventions that will increase the chances for your patient's survival.

Crime Scene Awareness

Persons that are the first responders to crime and other incident scenes are responsible for safeguarding the scene. Attendees will gain a solid understanding of the dynamics of various scenes, the importance of timely and thorough information gathering, the fragile nature of physical evidence, how physical evidence can be used in criminal and non-criminal investigations and what methods can best be employed to protect, preserve and if needed, collect evidence at the scene.

Pediatric Traumatic Injuries

Participants will explore the differences between adults and kids in relation to anatomy and injury patterns secondary to specific mechanisms. Discussion will include assessment, basic interventions and several case reviews.

Airway Management

This course will focus on the fundamental aspects of anatomy and patient status; providing a practical approach for prehospital providers working on airway management and patient ventilation skills. Using basic to advance techniques participants will learn and practice effective airway management in a variety of situation and conditions. This class is a lecture and lab course.

Enhancing Grant Writing Skills for the AFG Program

This program is designed to assist fire departments in the grant writing process, with emphasis on the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program. This workshop will focus on understanding the electronic scoring process, and developing a good grant narrative. This workshop is meant for those
fire departments that have never applied for the AFG, or have applied but have not been successful.

Aeromedical Scene Considerations

LifeNet's critical transport team will discuss patient criteria for rapid air transport, proper utilization of the helicopter, & packaging of patients for aeromedical transport. A review of patient assessment and the priorities of care will also be discussed.

Fire Certification Exams

The Fire Service Training Bureau will offer the Fire Fighter 1 and 2, Instructor 1, and Fire Officer 1 exams at SWIFT on Saturday, Sept. 19, the times are to be determined. Please note the exam will take a minimum of three hours. Attendance is by pre-registration only. NO WALK–INS WILL BE ALLOWED.


Those testing for the first time need to submit an application form with certification fee or billing information. To receive an application please contact the Fire Service Training Bureau, 888-469-2374. Fire Fighter 1 & 2 exams will be based on the 2002 Edition of the NFPA 1001 Professional Qualifications for Fire Fighters and the Essentials 5th edition. Bring full protective equipment & SCBA to the exam site. No facial hair in the area of the face piece seal is allowed. No exceptions will be made.

Application deadline for this exam site is (August 28, 2009—THREE WEEKS PRIOR TO THE TEST DATE). Send your application and fees directly to:

Fire School Cost

The Regional Fire School consists of two days of training. The cost is $60 per person for 2 days and $40 per person for one day. Lunch will be provided each day. *Individuals from Iowa volunteer and combination fire departments registered in these courses will receive a $15 reduction in Fire School fees, due to a partial grant from the Iowa Volunteer Fire Fighters Training Fund. If a person registers for an IVFTF sponsored class and a non-funded class, the registration fee is $60.

Registration Information

You may register by mail, fax, or telephone. To register by mail, complete the registration form and send it with the proper fees to the indicated address. Please feel free to duplicate this form for additional registrations. To register by fax, fax the completed registration form to (712) 325-3729. For additional information, phone (712) 325-3256, and leave your name, phone number, and a short message and someone will return your call. Registration deadline is Friday, Sept. 4, 2009 to guarantee your shirt size. Walk-ins will be accepted at the registration table each morning of the school.


Billing and Refund Policy

Billing for all registered participants will be done regardless of attendance. Registrations canceled in writing before 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 11, 2009 will receive a full refund. After that date, a $15 cancellation fee will be assessed.


Facial Hair Policy

Individuals with beards, sideburns or other hairstyles that interfere with the proper seal of a breathing apparatus face piece will not be allowed to participate in classes requiring SCBA use.


Liability Waiver and Release

The Pottawattamie County Fireman’s Association and Iowa Western Community College will provide instruction in the courses the participant selects under the supervision of competent
instructors. Some of the courses involve hands-on training that may subject participants to risk of injury. In consideration of being permitted to enroll in such courses, the participant acknowledges
that he/she is aware of the risks associated with participation in such courses and is voluntarily agreeing to assume such risks. The Pottawattamie County Fireman’s Association and Iowa Western Community College, except as provided under Chapter 25-A of the Code of Iowa relating to tort claims, shall not be held liable for damages to equipment or injuries to students or persons participating in the school.


Personal Protective Equipment

The following rules regarding personal protective equipment will apply for hands-on classes if “Personal Protective Equipment Requirements Apply” is indicated in the class description. Students must provide the following equipment in order to participate:

• Helmet (NFPA compliant)

• Protective Hood

• Coat with liner (NFPA compliant)

• Pants with liner (NFPA compliant)

• Fire Fighting boots

• Gloves

• Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus with spare cylinder. Any exceptions to individual equipment items will be noted in the class descriptions

In order to hold many of the classes there must be a minimum number of students pre-registered. If you are interested in a class please pre-register as soon as possible to help prevent classes having to be cancelled due to low enrollment.
