General Information

Register early! Classes often fill rapidly, and we cannot guarantee last minute registrations. Early registration can also prevent a lightly attended class from being cancelled. Prepayment is required for Continuing Education classes. Registration in class is not guaranteed until full payment is received.

Class Cancellations

If a course does not have sufficient enrollment to justify holding classes, we reserve the right to cancel, combine or change the class schedule. If the class you registered for is cancelled you will be contacted and a 100% refund will be processed.

If you cannot attend

You may cancel your registration one business day before the start of class to receive a 100% refund. If you register for a class and do not attend, and did not cancel at least one business day in advance of the class, you will still be responsible for the amount owed. Cancellations received after the start of a class may request a refund in writing.

Inclement Weather

Listen to local radio and television stations for the official closure announcements.

CEU's

Continuing Education Units (CEU's) are defined as ten hours of participation in approved classes. CEU's are recognized nationally as a measure of in-service education and training and are often required to maintain professional license or certification. Iowa Western offers a certificate of completion indicating the number of CEU's earned for students who successfully complete approved classes. Note: It is your responsibility to ensure classes are acceptable for your intended purpose.

Discrimination

Iowa Western Community College does not discriminate on the basis of age, disability, gender, race, religion or national origin in its educational programs, activities, employment practices or admissions procedures. For more information on IWCC's discrimination policies, contact the Dean of Student Services at (712) 325-3276.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do you want so much information when I take a class, particularly Social Security number and birth date?

To keep you you, all you and only you. We have the names of several hundred thousand current and former students in our computer system. In many cases looking up a person by first and last name will return pages of people with the same name. People also use nicknames and change their names, address and phone numbers. It is important to you and us, that we keep all your courses and accounting information together under one name, yours. If we duplicate you, or put your information under another person, or add another person’s information to your record, your transcripts and bills will be wrong. For those of you that take courses to keep your professional licenses, or because of a court order, (such as for driving or other offenses) accurate reporting is essential. Please sign in completely and legibly so we can keep you you, all you and only you.

Are you going to sell my name and address or send me a bunch of junk mail?

No and no. Federal law prohibits schools from releasing information on students without their consent. We can’t even mail grades to parents. We mail college information to those that have an on going relationship with the college, such as donors. We also mail people who must take continuing education courses to maintain their licenses, but only if they request to be on the mailing list for their profession.

I have a great hobby; can I share it by teaching a class?

Yes, many people do every year. If you have a topic you think others would be interested in, contact the Continuing Education Department in Council Bluffs or your local site in Clarinda, Atlantic, Harlan or Shenandoah. To find the right person to talk to, pick the phone number for a similar class from our catalog.
