Variable Frequency Drives
A variable frequency drive (VFD) is a system for controlling the rotational speed of a 3-phase AC induction motor by controlling the frequency of the electrical power supplied to the motor. The drive also provides many other operating functions for the motor such as controlled starting, stopping, and providing over current protection to name a few. This course introduces the student to the VFD and provides an understanding of its functions. The course will cover the basic theory of how the drive operates, discuss the various parameters found in most AC drives, and allow the participants to do hands-on programming of an Allen-Bradley Powerflex 40 VFD.
