EMT- B (Emergency Medical Technician - Basic)

The EMT-B course emphasizes the development of student skills in a patient assessment-based program, recognition of signs and symptoms regarding illness or injury and the proper procedures when rendering emergency care to the sick or injured.  Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  • Demonstrate and understand the overall role and responsibility of the EMT-B in performing both emergency medical care and operational aspect of the profession.
  • Demonstrate skill in the usage of all equipment required to deliver emergency care to the sick and injured.
Prerequisites:
  • Must be at least 17 years old at the time of enrollment
  • Must be proficient in reading, writing and speaking English
  • Must be physically able to perform all functions of an EMT-B
  • Must have written documentation of TB test
  • Must be currently certified in Healthcare Provider level CPR prior to applying and for the duration of program
  • Must have high school diploma or GED or proof of next May graduation
  • Must submit to drug screening
  • Must provide own stethoscope 

You must provide Iowa Western Community College with the following documentation on the first night of class: Documentation of having a TB test from your doctor/nurse/clinic. A copy of your CPR card or documentation from where you attended CPR class

Course Content:

The EMT-Basic program is designed to teach individuals how to provide more in depth care and treatment than that of the First Responder. The EMT-Basic is taught how to assess, treat and transport the sick and injured patient. Upon completion of this program the student will be able to perform:

  • A step by step patient assessment of the sick and injured patient.
  • A detailed and focused history on patients of all ages
  • Vitals signs on all ages of patients.
  • Proper immobilization and packaging of the patient for transport
  • Proper application of various immobilization devices including splints and PASG
  • Insertion of various airway devices including the double lumen combitube and proper administration of oxygen therapy
  • Proper use of the Automated External Defibrillator
  • Maintenance and discontinuance of non-medicated IV's
  • Assisting patients in self administration of nitroglycerine, auto-injected epinephrine,and medicated inhalers
  • Administration of oral glucose and activated charcoal
  • Prehospital care of the OB patient, the newborn, and emergent delivery procedures
  • Proper care of the patient with traumatic injuries including amputations
  • Proper care of burns
  • Rapid extrication procedures
  • Assessment and proper care of environmental emergencies
  • Proper documentation of patient care on the appropriate pre-hospital run report
  • Proper communication of a patient report to the receiving facility
  • Safe operation on an emergency vehicle
  • Appropriate destination decision of the trauma patient
  • Basic anatomy terms, proper medical terms and abbreviations, and basic pharmacology terms
  • Perform the required number of patient contacts and skills required to meet the National DOT Standards
  • Pass all written evaluations and practical skills stations during the didactic portion of the class with the required percentages.

Upon completion of the above written and practical skills and objectives the student will be eligible to take the National Registry practical and written exam.

Program length is approximately 120 hours of didactic/classroom time in addition to the clinical and field experience.

Includes tuition, malpractice insurance, books, shirt and practical testing fees).  Written exam fees are not included.  A nonrefundable deposit of $25 must be included with your registration.  If billed to your service, a letter indicating financial responsibility must be submitted before the first night of class.
