Course Description
Medication Manager is a 10 hour class with a 2 hour clinical or laboratory taught by a Registered Nurse. The class is designed to prepare individuals to safely administer or supervise self administration of non parenteral medications in a 15 bed or less MR residential program, a child caring facility, supervised apartment living, or community based living. Emphasis is placed on safely administering medications or supervising the self-administration from a prescription bottle or single unit dose and observing for adverse reactions to the medications.

Course Approval
This course has been approved by the State of Iowa Board of Pharmacy Examiners, the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals, and the Iowa Department of Human Services

Competencies
Safely administer or supervise self administration of nonparenteral medications in specified facilities that acknowledge the medication manager.
Performance objectives required to obtain competency
1. List the legislative requirements associated with medication administration
2. Describe the role of the medication manager
3. Identify required methods for drug store/disposal
4. Define terms associated with drug administration
5. Differentiate between drug preparations including precautions for administration
6. List the six rights of medication administration
7. Identify information medication managers must know prior to administering medications
8. Demonstrate correct procedure for safe administration of nonparenteral medications.
Method of Assessment
1. Eighty percent (80%) or better on a 50 – 100 questions final for cognitive.
2. Satisfactory completion of laboratory or clinical experience check list which must be supervised by a Registered Nurse
3. All skills checklist must be returned with legible signature within 6 weeks of completing the Medication Manager class.
4. Students must attend 100% of the class.
Certificate
A Certificate of completion will be issued when the student meets the attendance, grade and lab requirements.
