This 10 hour course is designed primarily for individuals who have not tested and are not currently listed on the Direct Care Registry in Iowa, or individuals who have tested earlier but have not worked in 24 months and not eligible to work unless they retest in the State of Iowa. All of the lab/clinical portion of the course must be attended. 

Prerequisite:  Students must provide a Certificate of Completion from a Nurse Aide course of at least 75 hours.

The course reviews key information needed for preparing students to be able to complete both the written and the skills portion of the state competency exam. In general, course content will include Nurse Aide responsibility in healthcare, communication, resident rights, mandatory reporting of abuse, cultural sensitivity, safety including the Heimlich Maneuver, infection control, safety, basic nursing skills including vital signs, personal care skills including feeding, bathing, dressing, elimination needs, skin care, transfers, positioning and turning, end of life care, care of the cognitively impaired resident, and basic restorative services. The RN instructor will individualize each course to meet the needs of the students.

Course Objectives:

  • Prepare the individual to successfully complete the State of Iowa Written and Skills Competency Exam
  • Offer current Nurse Aides the opportunity to update his/her knowledge of personal care and basic nursing skills needed to care for patients in the long-term care setting
