Staff at Iowa Western annually measure students' retention within programs of study on a cohort basis. Each student who begins a program of study may persist to a following academic year as "still in current year"; graduate; withdraw; or change programs. Staff can measure final program completion/graduation rates for any cohort that does not have any more "still in current year" students. A reader will note measurements of "program retention" and "college retention" in reports. Program retention = (still in current year + graduate) / cohort total. College retention = (still in current year + graduate + change programs) / cohort total.
