Phlebotomy Program

Requirements Before Starting

  • Copy of High School Diploma or GED
  • Read the Dress Code Requirements
  • High school GPA of at least 2.0
  • Copy of Certified Nurse Aide Certificate
  • Documentation of Physical, Current Vaccinations and Immunizations including but not limited to the Mandated COVID Vaccinations and (2) Tuberculin Skin Tests*
  • Background and Drug Screen**
  • Complete Immunization/Registration Form
  • Meet with Program Coordinator to discuss class and your records. An appoint is suggested.

  • Gather ALL Information Listed Above and Either MAIL or DELIVER the Information to Iowa Western’s Continuing Education Department
  • Receive Formal Acceptance into Program

*Tests must be completed within 6 months prior to the class start date (One weeks time is required between first and second tests. Tests are performed by the healthcare provider of your choice)

Dress Code

Students will be required to clean and neatly dress to present a professional appearance for class, lab, and clinical. Students must wear scrubs (uniform) and lab coats when working on lab skills during the classroom portion of the course, and when they are at the clinical sites. Scrubs should be clean and pressed.

Appropriate footwear will be required in the lab and clinical area. Closed-toe shoes that are soft-soled, such as white tennis or similar shoes must be worn in the lab and clinical area; no sandals or flip-flops. Name tags will be issued and must be displayed at all times. Body piercings must be removed and tattoos must be covered with makeup or band-aids. Hair must be clean and tied back.

Men should keep facial hair trimmed. If a male student wishes to wear a mustache and/or beard, it must be kept clean and well-groomed (No five o’clock shadow).

Students are expected to bathe regularly to avoid offensive odor. In addition, students should refrain from excessive use of make-up, perfumes, and/or aftershave cologne. Fingernails need to be clean and at a reasonable length. Reasonable length is defined as 1/8” above the fingertip. You may not wear fingernail polish or acrylic nails. Jewelry should be limited to wedding rings and a wristwatch.

Iowa Western Community College is a nonsmoking campus. If you choose to smoke, please do not come to class, lab, or clinical smelling of cigarettes.

What Will you Do: Phlebotomists draw blood for tests, transfusions, research, or blood donations. Some explain their work to patients and provide assistance when patients have adverse reactions after their blood is drawn. A career in phlebotomy is exciting and rewarding.

Jobs: Lead Phlebotomist, Phlebotomy Specialist, Collections Phlebotomy Specialist, Registered Phlebotomy Specialist, and Nurse.

The employment of phlebotomists is projected to grow 25 percent from 2014 to 2024, much faster than the average for all occupations.


Refunds: You may cancel your registration 5 business days prior to the start of the class date and receive a 100% refund excluding the $50 non-refundable processing fee. If contacting outside Iowa Western Community College’s Continuing Education Department business hours, leave a voicemail and or send the department an email. Iowa Western’s Continuing Education is not responsible for refunds if contact is not pursued via voicemail and or email. In compliance with the IWCC policy, refunds will only be produced in the form of a check.  A check will be issued within 14 business days after the refund is admitted to the customer. Refund will be sent to the customer’s address that is on file. Certain program restrictions may apply. Cancellations: Iowa Western reserves the right to cancel any class where difficulties arise in staffing or scheduling or where a minimum enrollment is not achieved.  A full refund will be issued for all canceled classes.

Transfers/Withdrawals: Transfers may be subject to $25.00 transfer fee.  Non-attendance for a class does not constitute a withdrawal and refunds are not issued for non-attendance.  Transfers may be made up to two full business days (unless otherwise noted in the class information) prior to the start date of the class.  After that time, transfers will not be permitted and no refund will be issued.
