How to Get Your Student to Get Counseling
It is recommended that you express your reasons for concern in a straightforward, yet caring, and supportive way. It might be helpful to say something like:
"I am worried about you. You just don't seem to be yourself lately. Have you thought about going to talk to someone about your concerns? I think it would be really good for you to talk with an objective person who can help you sort out what ever is bothering you. Will you go over to the Student Assistance Office and make an appointment?"
Of course, you will put this into language that fits your style, but the main point is to be direct and matter of fact, but still caring.
CONFIDENTIALITY - We understand that parents and other concerned people naturally care about their student and are interested in if and what help they are receiving through the Student Assistance Office. Though we are available to consult with you and answer general questions, we must treat your student’s information with confidentiality. Please see our Confidentiality Policy for further information.
Making an Appointment at the Counseling Center
Students may schedule an appointment by calling (712) 325-3284 or stopping by the Student Assistance Office located in Clark Hall - Room 006. Every attempt is made to schedule appointments as soon as possible, usually within a day or two from the time of the request. During times of heavy demand, however, students may have to wait longer. If someone is in crisis we will meet their needs as soon as possible.
