Peer Mentoring

The peer mentoring component of the TRiO/ Student Support Services program is a crucial form of support for students as they integrate into the academic and social culture of Iowa Western. TRiO utilizes Academic Coaches in orienting new participants to our program and introduces them to various campus and community resources. Academic Coaches are also trained to provide individual mentoring to TRiO participants in all areas that contribute to academic success.

As students enter the TRiO program, they are assigned to an Academic Coach who is instrumental in assisting with the Intake process and familiarizing students with the services offered by the TRiO program. Peer MentoringThis relationship offers Academic Coaches the opportunity to develop leadership skills while they assist students in adjusting to campus life and developing the following skills:

  • Time Management and Organization
  • Test preparation and Test Anxiety
  • Development of good study skills and habits
  • Establishing short and long term goals
  • Assistance with specific strategies to raise your GPA
  • General academic and social support
  • Assistance with basic computer skills

The Peer Mentors maintain weekly hours and are available by appointment as well on a walk-in basis.
