Athletics

Iowa Western Community College is a proud, successful participant in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). The Reivers have become a traditional power in NJCAA Division 1 athletics, competing in baseball, softball, volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball.

Iowa Western has amassed an impressive 26 NJCAA All-Americans and 38 Academic All-Americans during its existence in the league. The college also boasts a long line of talented student-athletes who have moved on to participate in NCAA Division 1 sports.

Iowa Western’s athletic facilities are second to none in the area. Along with a newly remodeled baseball/softball complex, Iowa Western’s indoor teams call the Kanesville Arena home. The 28,000- square-foot facility was completed in 1999 and features seating capacity of 1,450 and a portable parquet floor that can accommodate baseball, volleyball, and other sporting events.

A new soccer complex was dedicated in Fall 2005, enabling the college to serve as host to the NJCAA Regional Soccer Championships. Iowa Western also offers golf programs to area athletes, with home matches played at the popular Bent Tree Country Club east of Council Bluffs.

The Arts

Students seeking a well-rounded education complete with arts and entertainment opportunities look no further than Iowa Western Community College. Overlooking the beautiful Loess Hills is the college’s new Arts Center, which is home to theater, dance, art, and music instruction. The $9 million Arts Center is considered the premier arts facility in Southwest Iowa, offering both student productions and a national touring season.

The new Arts Center, by design, accommodates a variety of theater productions, from the intimate to the broad appeal presentation. Students in our Theater Department enjoy performing and working as they prepare for a variety of aspects within the collaborative field of theater. Art students gain a solid understanding of art history from the prehistoric to the present and develop strong fundamental skills working in such mediums as drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, and computer art while enjoying breathtaking views of the Loess Hills from their second floor classroom. And, opportunities abound in the college’s music department, where students gain valuable performance experience by participating in our two concert choirs, a show choir, a jazz ensemble, and a community band.
