Iowa Western invites you to study credit English (ESL) in a safe and supportive learning environment. Our English Learning Program offers small classes, friendly teachers, spacious rooms and labs with the latest technology as well as many special activities that help you develop your English language skills in Reading, Writing, Listening/Speaking. Academic fluency is emphasized in long-term goals to be successful in the U.S. and global communities.

FAQ's
Q: How long will it take me to complete the ESL Program?
A: We offer four levels of ESL courses, and we place students into courses using the COMPASS ESL test, which is a placement assessment designed to measure skills in writing, reading, and listening for students for whom English is not their first language. The length of time is takes to complete the ESL program is different for each individual student. Depending on initial ESL placement, it can take between and one and four semesters.
Q: Do I Need to study for the COMPASS ESL test?
A:No, it is not necessary to study for the COMPASS ESL. The COMPASS ESL is a computerized assessment, and is not timed. Our Test Proctors will assist you with getting started, and after taking the assessment you will meet with an advisor to discuss the results. Q: Will I receive a certificate upon completion?
A: Yes, students that successfully complete the ESL Program receive a certificate to recognize their completion and their hard work.
Q: Can I receive financial aid while taking ESL courses?
A:Financial aid is available to those who are eligible for federal student aid. US Citizens, Permanent Residents, Refugees and Asylees are encouraged to apply for federal student aid. Visit our Cost and Financial Aid pages for more information on federal student aid.
Q:Does Iowa Western offer academic assistance?
A:Yes! The Academic Success Center is a tutoring facility that is available to all Iowa Western Students who need academic assistance, including free tutoring in many different subject areas.
Q:Can athletes enroll in ESL classes?
A:Yes. In fact, there are many ESL students at Iowa Western who participate in our athletic programs.
