Lowe's Awards Grant to IWCC to Develop Playground
Council Bluffs, Iowa - Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation Awards $5000 to Iowa Western to develop a Nature Explorer Playground

Iowa Western and the Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation (LCEF) announced a major gift in support of Iowa Western’s mission to engage individuals in building and sustaining vibrant communities.

The Lowe’s/Keep America Beautiful Community Improvement Grant of $5,000 is one of 75 merit-based grants awarded nationally to support grassroots community improvement projects including community gardens, tree plantings, litter and debris cleanups, recycling programs, park and playground restorations, and beautification efforts.

The Council Bluffs, Iowa grant will provide funding for Iowa Western to implement the project, ‘Learning Through Your Senses.’  This project will develop an outdoor playground for the college’s Child Care Center to encourage children to learn through their senses and to experience a play area that promotes nature and learning.  College students in the Turf and Landscape Management Program, with the collaboration from the Sustainability Department and the Early Childhood Education program, will design, implement and maintain a playground to teach the children a range of math and science topics that include native plants, bio-diversity, gardening, building, ecological studies, environmental concerns and more.

“Keep America Beautiful is proud of the positive impact that Iowa Western’s project will have in the Council Bluff’s community,” said Keep America Beautiful President and CEO Matt McKenna. “We are truly grateful to Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation for its support and leadership that is being demonstrated in community sustainability.”
