Admission Requirements
Admission to the college is granted to all individuals who are high school graduates or the equivalent; however, some programs may require additional information for acceptance. We encourage you to review our Getting Started Checklist for specific requirements for admission.
Program Information
The Automotive Mechanics program is a combination of theory classes and hands-on training in the lab and shop to prepare students to become entry-level vehicle maintenance mechanics.
The Automotive program has:
- Internships for qualified students
- Modern, up-to-date equipment
- On-line information systems
- Mitchell, AllData, Ford, General Motors
- Factory and aftermarket manuals
- Students may purchase hand tools for their jobs at substantial discounts.
The Iowa Western Automotive Technology Program is nationally certified by N.A.T.E.F. (National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation) and A.S.E. (Automotive Service Excellence)
Career Opportunities
- One out of every ten jobs in the United States is dependent on the automotive industry.
- No other industry is linked to so much manufacturing or generates more retail business and employment.
- Job opportunities for automotive service technicians and mechanics is expected to increase about as fast as the average (10-20%) through the year 2012. This is equal to 82,000 - 164,000 new jobs between 2002-2012.
- Automotive service technicians and mechanics (12.4 percent)
- Automotive body and related repairers (13.2 percent)
- Automotive glass installers and repairers (10.7 percent)

The Facility
The Automotive Technology program is located in recently renovated Dodge Hall. Bright, spacious, well-equipped automotive classrooms, labs, and shop facilties greatly enhance the student's learning experience. Dodge Hall also features a 70-seat auditorium, computer lab, and cutting edge technology in its many spacious program-specific and general purpose classrooms and laboratories.
