Welcome to Chemistry

chemistry students
Description:

Iowa Western Community College Chemistry Program prepares the student for transfer into a four-year      institution program.

Graduates will have acquired a broad foundation of knowledge in the physical sciences.  Graduates of this program are awarded an Associate in Science degree.

Although members of the science department make every effort to consult with various colleges and universities regarding transfer requirements, students are encouraged to consult catalogs, web sites and advisors at their chosen four-year institution during their freshman year.

Admission Requirements

Admission to the college is granted to all individuals who are high school graduates or the equivalent; however, some programs may require additional information for acceptance. We encourage you to review our Getting Started Checklist for specific requirement for admission.

 Career Opportunities

According to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor and Statistics, about 43% of chemists and material scientists are employed in manufacturing firms that produce plastics in the chemical manufacturing industry.  About 15% of chemists and material scientists work in architecture, engineering and related fields. Chemists are also in demand as teachers in high schools as well as faculty in colleges and universities. Chemists and materials scientists are employed in all parts of the country, but they are mainly concentrated in large industrial areas.

Course Sequences

All students need to follow a science course progression.  See the Science Major Course Flow Chart.
