Program Information

The Education program offers students the opportunity to begin their career as an elementary or secondary teacher.  After completing the two-year Associate of Arts degree at Iowa Western Community College, students may continue pursuing a four-year bachelors degree towards a teaching certificate at a college or university. Paraeducator certification can also be obtained with the Education degree.  A paraeducator assists a certified classroom teacher with class activities and works one-on-one with individual students.

Entrance Requirements/Enrollment

There are no entrance requirements for the Education program.  While enrolled in the Education program, you must maintain a 2.0 G.P.A.  Approximately 150 Iowa Western students each year are declared education majors.

Course of Study

The majority of the courses in the Education program are general education courses that will transfer to four-year schools.  For additional information on recommended course sequence, please refer to the program guide.

The Facility

Classrooms at Iowa Western have the latest technologies for faculty to deliver quality instruction.  Iowa Western's spacious classroom and laboratory facilities are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and technology.

Our wireless network also allows students to access the internet from virtually anywhere on campus.

Articulation/Transfer Opportunities

teacher

Iowa Western Community College has established articulation agreements with the various four-year schools, local and state. The majority of coursework in the Education program are general studies courses, which prepares students to enter a college of education at four-year institutions. It is very important for students in the Education program to determine as soon as possible what school they are transferring to and begin dialogue with them concerning what courses will transfer.

Career Opportunities

Projections throughout the country show an anticipated teacher shortage in the near future. Many states are making earnest efforts to upgrade the salaries of teachers in order to attract more young people into the profession. Job prospects look good, especially in high demand areas such as math, technology, and science.

Scholarship Information

Iowa Western Community College has many scholarship opportunities available for new and continuing students.  We encourage you to take a moment to explore these options by visiting our Scholarship Page - the few minutes it takes to fill out the application may literally pay off.

State and federal loan forgiveness programs are available for educators.
