Welcome to Radio Broadcasting
Program Information
So you think you want to work in radio...there's really nothing quite like it. Radio is challenging, long hours, working holidays, weekends, snow storms, heat waves and floods. You work with crazy people and broadcast to thousands of listeners who are a little bit crazy themselves...and you still want to work in radio? Good!
Here's the skinny on an Associate of Applied Science degree in Electronic Media Studies in radio. First, this degree is designed to allow you to enter the field after graduation. You will have the opportunity to work at KIWR (89.7 The River) while attending classes. The coupling of the theory and practical hands-on approach is intensive and comprehensive.
Secondly, you will work and learn from professionals in the industry. Several of the full time employees of The River will be teaching you industry expectations and helping you gain the necessary skills to get your first job in Radio.
Contrary to popular belief, radio is not just being a disc jockey. This program teaches you everything from how to write commercials, develop production and on-air talent techniques, news, sales, programming, and promotions. In the second year, you can move on to learn more advanced skills in your particular area of interest.
So you think you want to work in radio...there's no better place than Iowa Western Community College. Come hungry!
