About the Program
As our population ages, the need for licensed pharmacists will continue to grow. Iowa Western's Pre-Pharmacy study program will prepare you well for this career. After completion of your Associate of Science degree requirements, you’ll be able to transfer to a four-year institution to complete a bachelor’s degree or higher.
After completing a bachelor’s degree, you will need to pursue admittance to an accredited college or school of pharmacy. At Iowa Western, you will complete general education courses that serve as the foundation for your future training as a pharmacist, including math, chemistry, and biology.
Iowa Western’s modern science laboratories stand up to those at many four-year colleges and universities, utilizing data acquisition software that calculates data from the experiments our students conduct. Classes at Iowa Western are taught by experienced faculty, rather than Teachers Assistants, and our small classes allow for one-on-one interaction with instructors.
The Pre-Pharmacy program is designed for students intending to transfer on to a four-year institution. In order to become a pharmacist, students must earn a Pharm.D. degree from an accredited college or school of pharmacy. As a pharmacist, you would dispense drugs prescribed by physicians and other health care practitioners and provide information to patients about medications and their use. Pharmacists must understand the use, composition, and effects of drugs and often advise physicians on the selections, dosage, interaction, and possible side effects of medications.
* Salaries reflect completion of a Bachelor's degree or higher.
