About the Program
A career in theatre can be exciting and enjoyable at the same time, and Iowa Western can prepare you for this field by enrolling in the Technical Theatre program of study. As you work toward an Associate of Arts degree, you’ll prepare for the entertainment industry by studying many different areas of performing arts including, stage rigging, set design and construction, sound engineering, lighting, and costume and makeup design.
There is much more than classroom work involved in this program. Iowa Western also brings in touring acts, and students work closely with stagehands and in the costume shop for hands-on experience. In addition, you’ll be connected to community resources and gain important field experience. A new light board is one of the high-tech tools available in our renowned Arts Center, proof that Iowa Western is committed to keeping up-to-date with technology.
This program is designed for students intending to transfer to a four-year institution upon completion of this two-year degree. The Technical Theatre program prepares students for entry-level technical positions in the entertainment industry. These may include, but are not limited to, stage rigging, stage building, sound engineering, lighting, costume building, makeup design, and scene painting. Hands-on experience and skill is highly valued in this industry. It is common to work either as a free-lance contractor or to pursue a full-time contracted position.
