During the two years that students are enrolled in the Design Technology program,
students are given many opportunities to better prepare themselves for a career once
they graduate. Each semester students will have to complete projects that encompass
many different areas of the Design Technology. The projects tie in classroom topics
to give students an opportunity to see the practical applications of their class
All Design Technology students are required to complete an internship. This opportunity provides them with real-world experience working in the field they are studying. The internship also provides students a better understanding of what a job as a Design Technologist may include after they receive their degree.
- 1st semester Projects
- 2011-Individual Design of small projects
- 2012- Concept Design of Material Handling System
- 2nd semester projects
- RC Car Projects
- 2012-One Team 1/8 RC Car Build Project
- RC Car Projects
The students were given a fully disassembled 1/8 scale radio control car kit and had to reverse engineer each component into virtual modeling software. They were required to catalogue every part, create 3D models of the components, sub assemblies, and final assembly of the whole car, create alternate components to be printed on the Design Technology 3D printer and then physically reassemble the car.
- 2013-Two Teams 1/10 RC Car Break-down and Build Project
The second year of the RC car project the students were broken into two different teams. This year the groups were required to disassemble the car, catalogue every part, create 3D models of the components, sub assemblies, and final assembly of the whole car, create alternate components to be printed on the Design Technology 3D printer and then physically reassemble the car. This requires them to work in large groups, build communication skills, develop leadership experiences, and learn how to be a good teammate.
- Freshman quotes
“I feel that I came into this Design Technology prepared for life after I graduate
because I have been in the workplace for 12+years. Specifically to Design Technology,
I feel it will have prepared me to be successful in a manufacturing/engineering design
- Aric Zimmer, Design Technology Student
“I hope to use previous knowledge as well and the knowledge learned from Design Technology
to better my future and be a part of an every growing and changing industry in which
I can be proud of what I have done.”
- Roger Schmidt, Design Technology Student
Every Design tech student is required to complete an internship before graduation. Students will be gaining valuable work experiences that will allow them to enhance their marketability and job hunting skills.
- 3rd Semester projects
- Design of a Product Polishing System; Jacobs Corp. (Harlan, IA)
Students worked with the Jacobs Corporation in Harlan, IA to design and propose a new, universal polishing system that would increase the efficiency of the process and to reduce the physical strain on the employee.
- 4th semester projects
- 2013- University of Iowa Hand Built Bike Project
For their senior design project the students work closely with the University of Iowa to design and fabricate a hand built bicycle capable of traveling over any road surface in Iowa while carrying a load of cargo.
- Sophomore Quotes
The staff is very accommodating. Every student has a different learning style and
background. I feel the instructors found ways to mesh each student’s background into
the curriculum. We as students, all benefited from the teaching style.”
-Paul Harry, Design Technology Student
” I thought Design Technology would be a good program that might give me further information about the product design process, and more information about how to be more professional in the work place. Hopefully the results of this program will allow me to have more of a management roll in my current company or in any future company that I may work for.”
-Justin Anderson, Design Technology Student
