About the Program
The English program of study prepares students to transfer to four-year colleges and universities to complete undergraduate majors in Literature and Communication Arts or pursue related fields in education. Students study British literature, fiction, poetry, and drama. Graduates of this program are awarded an Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree.
This program is designed for students intending to transfer to a four-year institution upon completion of this two-year degree. English majors are often sought in communication-based fields such as technical writing, public relations, grant writing, and human resources. Many English majors also earn education degrees and teach high school literature and writing courses, or go on to seek masters and doctorate degrees and teach at the college level. An English degree is also a good stepping stone for those who plan to further their education in law or library science.
Upon the successful completion of the program students will:
- Analyze themes in various works of literature
- Evaluate various literary styles of prominent authors
- Demonstrate an understanding of how culture influences literature and how literature influences culture
