Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

The EMT course emphasizes the development of student skills in a patient assessment-based program, recognition of signs and symptoms regarding illness or injury and the proper procedures when rendering emergency care to the sick or injured. Students will be required to complete 36 hours of internship with area hospitals and ambulance services. Attendance for Class Orientation mandatory.

FREE Tuition Assistance Available!

This career training is approved for FREE tuition assistance through our Education 2 Employment program for eligible Iowa residents. Financial assistance may include training tuition, textbooks, tools, certification fees, required materials and other services. Email [email protected] or call (712) 325-3268 for more information! 


  • $895 Includes tuition, internship shirt, malpractice insurance, background check, NREMT psychomotor
    testing fee, and clinical internship fees. Payment due at registration.
  • $40-$150 textbook (based on purchase method).

** Written NREMT certification exam fees and state application fees are not included in course costs.(Approximately $100 at the end of the course)

If billed to your department or fire service, a letter indicating financial responsibility must be submitted before the class session.

Paramedics and EMTs are counted on daily to provide life-saving attention in emergency situations. This is a challenging, yet highly rewarding field that you can become part of after completing Iowa Westerns Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic program. Students completing the courses learn the fundamentals of caring for patients of traumatic and medical emergencies, as well as non-emergency situations. Those who complete the course successfully become eligible to sit for the National Registry of EMT's certification examination to become a certified emergency medical provider in the state of Iowa.
