Culinary Students Earn High Marks at Competition
Council Bluffs, Iowa - Three students in the Iowa Western Community College Culinary Arts Department earned high marks during a recent competition in Des Moines. Caleb Nichols of Omaha, Joseph McDowell of Council Bluffs and Austin Calhoon of Defiance, Iowa, teamed to win second-place honors in the Iowa Pork Producers statewide competition held at Des Moines Area Community College.
Indian Hills Community College captured top honors and a team from Iowa State University took third.
“Our students did a nice job with both preparation and presentation of their meal, and thus received high marks from the judges,” said Michael Hoppe, Associate Professor and Program Chair for the Iowa Western Culinary Arts, Restaurant and Hospitality Management Department. “Our students always excel at these competitions because of the excellent hands-on opportunities they receive at Iowa Western.”
