Iowa Western to Hold Ribbon Cutting for New Center
Council Bluffs, Iowa -

Iowa Western Community College will unveil an exciting new Entrepreneurial Center called The Port during a grand opening ceremony Thursday, July 10, at the college. The event will include a ribbon cutting ceremony in conjunction with the Council Bluffs Chamber of Commerce at 5:00 p.m. in Ashley Hall at Iowa Western’s campus in Council Bluffs. The Port is committed to developing best practices for business start-ups through providing a cutting edge technology workspace promoting entrepreneurial success.

The Port is a newly renovated space in Ashley Hall offering entrepreneurial assistance and guidance to students and community members made possible by a United States Department of Labor Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) grant. The $2.5 million grant was awarded to the Computer Information Technology (CIT) Department at Iowa Western.

The Department of Labor grant also will enable the Computer Information Technology program to enhance existing curriculum, create pathways for noncredit to credit CIT courses, and provide all courses online as well as in the classroom. In addition, funds will be used to develop an action plan to increase women and minority students in the Information Technology industry and to work with Iowa Workforce Development to connect with trade affected workers to offer additional training and education opportunities to get individuals back into the workforce. Another focus will be getting students work experience through internships either with current businesses or new entrepreneurs as well as enhancing the entrepreneurial environment within the community and at IWCC.

“This Department of Labor grant will enable the college to provide critical resources to up-and-coming entrepreneurs in our community,” said Iowa Western Community College President Dr. Dan Kinney.  “The Port will be a great asset in terms of providing state-of-the-art technology and other resources for our students and future businesses in the region.”

The open door concept of The Port will enhance the business environment for local entrepreneurs according to Scott Peck, Internship and Business Coordinator for The Port. “The Port is available to students, community members, and rising Entrepreneurs in need of a technologically advanced working space to give their business aspirations a kick start. Entrepreneurial resources are available within the center to get any business up and running including staff and potential interns that are in full support of entrepreneurial success.”
