Meet Cindy Wetterlind: Dedicated to Student Success
Since joining Iowa Western in 1995, Cindy Wetterlind has made it her mission to help students succeed. A Red Oak resident, Cindy now serves as Director of the Cass County Center, where her passion for accessible education continues to make a lasting impact on students and the community.
She began her career as a case manager at the Omni Centre and stepped into the director role in 2021. Her leadership is marked by compassion, commitment, and a deep understanding of the student experience.
Supporting Students in Cass County
Under Cindy’s leadership, the center supports a wide range of learners—from traditional and nontraditional students to about 100 high school students each semester. Many more students benefit through online coursework. With full-time faculty on-site, the Cass County Center offers in-person, hybrid, and online classes. The center also provides HiSET courses for those earning a high school equivalency diploma.
A Passion for Leadership
As a first-generation college student herself, Cindy understands how challenging it can be to navigate higher education. “I was a first-generation college student and struggled to navigate all things college-related. Knowing that I can have a positive impact on assisting students with reaching their educational goals is important to me,” Cindy said. “That sense of accomplishment helps me stay engaged with students and staff.” She also credits her team in Atlantic for their collaborative spirit. “We have a great staff here who work very well together. If there’s something I can’t answer for a student, I can always reach out to others in the building who are willing to help.” Cindy’s open-door policy keeps her connected with students, and weekly staff meetings foster ongoing collaboration and support.
Making a Difference
“Cindy goes above and beyond for our traditional students and high school dual enrollment students,” said Assistant Professor of English Dianna Blake. “She advocates for them and works with them until she finds the solutions to their problems.” Blake also praised Cindy’s leadership among faculty: “Cindy is a wonderful colleague who cares about us all and lifts us up when we’re stressed out or overwhelmed.”
From mentoring staff to advocating for students, Cindy’s leadership is strengthening the work happening in Cass County. Her commitment to student success and community partnerships makes her an invaluable part of Iowa Western.
