Shelby County Center

The Shelby County Center provides a spacious, modern facility that serves Harlan, Iowa, and the surrounding communities with a wide range of programs and classes. We offer college credit classes, a Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) Program, Continuing Education programs, and HiSET classes and testing services. Businesses that offer training, workshops, or require a meeting space for their personnel may rent our classrooms, many of which will comfortably accommodate up to 30 individuals. All rooms are equipped with state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment. The staff at the Shelby County Center of Iowa Western Community College will help you plan for your college and continuing educational needs.

Our goal is to provide students with one-on-one attention. Stop by the Shelby County Center for assistance with our college application, to speak with an advisor, learn about your financial aid options, and to register. We truly are a one-stop-shop and invite you to come by during business hours or call to make an appointment.

Financial Aid

Current students need to renew their Financial Aid every year. Go to www.fafsa.ed.gov, click “Fill Out A Renewal FAFSA” and follow the directions. If you have questions, contact the Iowa Western Financial Aid office at (712) 325-3295 or 1-800-432-5852 ext. 3295

Current students have the option of registering for classes online. Get started below:

Graduation

All students must apply for graduation via ROC during the final term of their program of study, even if they do not plan to participate in the graduation ceremony. The application will be available approximately two weeks after the start of each term. Check the Academic Calendar for graduation dates and the last day to apply for graduation each term. Information regarding the status of the student’s graduation application and information about the commencement will be sent to their Iowa Western email address. There is no charge for participating in the graduation ceremony and all students are encouraged to attend.


Continuing Education

Continuing Education at the Shelby County Center offers community members the opportunity to gain knowledge in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. Need to update your skills? Looking for professional CEUs for licensure renewal? Students can take classes in the areas of insurance, real estate, computer skills, Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), and much more!


HiSET (High School Equivalency) 

The Shelby County Center of Iowa Western Community College in Harlan offers preparation courses and exam opportunities for the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET). Formerly known as the GED, the HiSET is an exam that adults can complete to earn the equivalent to a high school diploma. Our staff will be with you every step of the way, providing guidance and support.
