Anyone who is enrolled in high school (or the equivalent) is eligible for CLEP. There are no age limitations. Students who are enrolled at Iowa Western may apply up to 30 credit hours earned by CLEP examination toward their degree. However, new students entering college directly from high school are encouraged to consult with their counselor or with an admissions advisor about the advisability of their participation in the program.
CLEP-earned credits will be recorded on the student’s Iowa Western transcript. Because students are not awarded a letter grade, test scores are not used when computing the student’s grade point average. Credit cannot be awarded if the student has already earned college credit for an equivalent course.
CLEP credit earned at Iowa Western usually transfers to other colleges or universities. However, Iowa Western does not assume responsibility for the transferability of CLEP credits.
Credit will be given only for the courses listed and only if the required score was met. Iowa Western must receive a CLEP transcript directly from the College Board in order to award credit.
There will be no charge for tuition or recording CLEP credits on a student’s transcript.
Examinations are offered via remote proctoring through CLEP or given by appointment in the Test Center on the second floor of the Student Center. Students need to bring photo identification. The exams are 90 minutes long.
All exams are computer-based. The results are displayed on the screen upon completion of the test, with the exception of College Composition that includes an essay, for which results will be mailed to the student in 4 to 6 weeks.
Visit the CLEP website at https://clep.collegeboard.org to order study materials, including the CLEP Official Study Guide (approx. $25) and individual subject guides (approx. $10). These resources contain descriptions of the exams, sample questions and answers, test-taking tips, and more.
You cannot repeat an examination of the same title within three months of the initial testing date. If you do retake within the three-month period, the scores will be invalid.
Students pay the $89 CLEP fee by creating an account at https://clep.collegeboard.org. Students pay the $30 administration fee to CLEP for remote proctoring or to Iowa Western’s Business Office prior to testing on campus.
Remote tests can be scheduled when registering for the exam.
Examinations on campus can be scheduled by calling Iowa Western at 1-800-432-5852 or 712-325-3200 to set a date and time.
