Mental Health Technician I
Requirements Before Starting
- Documentation of Current Vaccinations and Immunizations including but not limited to Mandated COVID Vaccinations and (2) Two-Step Tuberculin Skin Tests*
- Criminal Background Check**
- Class Registration Form Completed/Payment
- Mail or Bring in Documentation to Iowa Western Community College’s Continuing Education Department
*(2) Two-Step Tuberculin Skin Tests must be completed within 12 months prior to the class start date (One week’s time is required between first and second skin tests). Tests are preformed by the healthcare provider of your choice
**Iowa Western will perform background and drug screening for anyone who wishes to register for the course
About the Program
- This program prepares students in the theoretical and clinical practice to assist patients receiving care in a mental and behavioral health unit
- Students will begin with Introduction to Direct Patient Care, learning the hands-on skills to assist with activities of daily living, to include vital signs. Students will attend a six-hour Shadow Experience upon completion of this first module. Advancement into additional modules will encompass Professional Standards, Psychiatric Disorders/Abnormal Psychology, Treatment Plans and concluding with the Delivery and Safety of patients along with the clinical experience at a Behavioral Health Facility
- Students will learn skills to effectively promote a healing environment in Inpatient Psychiatric Acute Care, and Long-Term Psychiatric Care involving, pediatric, adult, and geriatric populations
- Skill to include milieu management, attend to patient behavior problems utilizing therapeutic communication skills, and de-escalation techniques. Mental Health Technicians lead group sessions for patients, with various topics regarding mental health, personal hygiene, and goals, to name a few
- Upon completion of this course, following a 1-6 month work experience, student will be prepared to take the Mental Health Technician Certification Exam
- Mental Health Technician II Certificate-to follow after 6 months of work experience

If contacting outside Iowa Western Community College’s Continuing Education Department business hours, leave a voicemail and or send the department an email. Iowa Western’s Continuing Education is not responsible for refunds if contact is not pursued via voicemail and or email. In compliance with the IWCC policy, refunds will only be produced in the form of a check. A check will be issued within 14 business days after the refund is admitted to the customer. Cancellations: Iowa Western reserves the right to cancel any class where difficulties arise in staffing or scheduling or where a minimum enrollment is not achieved. A full refund will be issued for all canceled classes. Transfers/Withdrawals: Transfers may be subject to $25.00 transfer fee. Non-attendance for a class does not constitute a withdrawal and refunds are not issued for non-attendance. Transfers may be made up to two full business days (unless otherwise noted in the class information) prior to the start date of the class. After that time, transfers will not be permitted and no refund will be issued.
