Heavy Equipment Operator
Heavy Equipment Operator Level 1
Level 1 prepares students for entry-level employment through instruction in jobsite safety, hazard recognition, equipment inspections, soil identification, and basic earthmoving principles.
Students develop skills in the safe operation of:
- Skid steers
- Excavators
- Wheel loaders
Classroom instruction, simulator training, and supervised equipment practice help students build the foundation needed to advance to Level 2.
Heavy Equipment Operator Level 2
Required prerequisite: Successful completion of Heavy Equipment Operator Level 1.
Level 2 builds on the foundational skills developed in Level 1. Students expand their knowledge of construction math, construction drawings, cut-and-fill calculations, land surveying, grade stakes, and laser levels.
Training combines classroom instruction, simulator training, and supervised practice on actual equipment. Students develop skills in operating dozers, backhoes, and motor graders while strengthening their earthmoving, grading, equipment inspection, and jobsite safety practices.
Heavy Equipment Operator Levels 1 & 2 Comprehensive
This comprehensive program provides a continuous path through both levels of training. Students complete the Level 1 requirements before advancing to Level 2.
The program covers foundational safety and earthmoving skills, then progresses to construction drawings, excavation math, land surveying, and grade control. Students train on skid steers, excavators, wheel loaders, dozers, backhoes, and motor graders through classroom instruction, immersive simulator training, and supervised field practice.
Hands-On Field Training
The final 40 hours—two full weeks—focus on realistic construction projects and operator proficiency, including:
- Dozer operation, material spreading, and rough grading
- Backhoe operation, trenching, excavation, and backfilling
- Motor grader operation and grade-control practice
- Applying grade stakes, laser levels, and cut-and-fill calculations
- Equipment inspections, safe operation, and operator proficiency evaluations
