Iowa Western Community College

The Iowa Medication Manager Certification is a 20-hour course. This course is approved by the Iowa Department of Inspections, Appeals and Licensure.

The purpose of this course is to prepare individuals to safely administer or supervise self-administration of non-parenteral medications in a Residential Care Facility of 15 or fewer beds, an Assisted Living Program, or other community-based settings such as a Supervised Apartment Living or Supported Community Living Arrangements. Emphasis is placed on safely administering medications or supervising the self-administration from a prescription bottle observing for obvious reactions to the medications. All students must meet Iowa Community College Core Standards.

• 17 Hours of Lecture; 3 Hours of Lab – as required by the State of Iowa
• We offer this course with 3 days of lecture, and one day of lab
• 6 Hours Prepare to Care Core Lecture, mandated by the State of Iowa, is day one
• The remaining 11 Hours of Lecture are days 2 and 3, with the State Final Exam at the conclusion of day 3. The lecture is head at one of the designated Iowa Western Community College locations.
• The State-mandated 3 hours of lab instruction is offered at Iowa Western Community College with a Registered Nurse. This lab does require additional registration, with an additional cost. NOTE: if you are employed at a facility that employs an RN, your staff RN can perform the 3-hour lab for you, after successful completion of the 17-hour lecture.
• A score of 80% is required for successful completion of the program.
