A commercial learner's permit (CLP) is a permit that only authorizes you to practice on public roads with a qualified CDL holder sitting next to you. 
The CLP test is broken down into three sections:
•    General knowledge
•    Air brakes
•    Combination vehicles
This online course will prepare you to take the General knowledge test to obtain your CLP. 
 

Registration Fee $1200.00

This two-week training program is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely operate a commercial or school bus. Upon completion, participants will be prepared to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger Endorsement. The course includes 80 hours of instruction, delivered through classroom learning, simulator training, and hands-on driving experience on a 48-foot school bus on both the driving range and public roads.

Admission Requirements
•    Obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) from the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV); fee: $12.
•    The CLP should be obtained 1–2 weeks (7–14 days) prior to the class start date.

Monday – Thursday     8am – 3pm (flexible after 1st week)  

Earn your Class B CDL to operate vehicles like dump trucks and straight trucks in as little as 2–3 weeks.
Program Highlights:
•    Online Entry-Level Driver Theory (ELDT): Flexible online learning.

Program Highlights:
•    Online Entry-Level Driver Theory (ELDT): Study the basics at your own pace.
•    Hands-On Driving Training: Practice turning, backing, and driving on rural and suburban roads.
•    State-of-the-Art Simulators: Hone your skills with cutting-edge virtual training.
•    CDL Testing: Take your DOT exam with our Iowa DOT-certified examiner.
Completion Time: Four weeks, with early testing available for proficient students.

August 15, 2026  10am-4:30pm 
This course is designed to educate and certify individuals who will be operating motorized vehicles. The course ensures that operators are knowledgeable about the safe and legal operation of MOPED. Bring have students bring a sack lunch as they will have 30-minute lunch break. 

It is recommended you take a moped safety course before operating your moped. If you are at least 14-years-old, but under age 16, a moped safety course is required by law. A student can take the class within 30 days of their 14th birthday; a license cannot be issued until they turn 14.

This program requires a mandatory parent and student orientation held one week prior to the start of class. Attendance at orientation is required to participate in the course.

The program includes both online classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel (BTW) training. The instructor will have detailed instructions on accessing the online coursework and scheduling driving sessions at orientation.

Please register using your child’s first and last name; however, enter the parent/guardian’s email address and phone number. Iowa Western can only communicate directly with parents/guardians and is not permitted to communicate with students.

After completing the online portion of the course, students have 45 days to complete six (6) behind-the-wheel driving sessions with the instructor.

Adults over the age of 18 years of age

This Class will be held Tu. & Th. 9/21 – 10/01  4:30-6:30 PM at Council Bluffs Campus, Dodge Hall.

Tuesday Oct 6th     9am – 2pm In-Person
This course is the basic course on understanding dealer responsibilities. This class will serve as a refresher course and will teach the requirements of being an auto dealer in Iowa and how to maintain a dealer’s license. Updates on changes to state and federal law, rules and regulations will be provided.  The trainer will discuss new laws enacted during the most recent legislative session impacting auto dealers as well as providing new information from federal and state agencies pertaining to the auto industry.  Dealers will be encouraged to bring forth areas of concern to assist with possible solutions to these concerns. Dealers will review videos from the staff of the Iowa Department of Transportation Bureau of Investigation and Identity Protection and the Consumer Protection Division of the Iowa Attorney General’s office.

Friday Nov 6th     9am – 2pm Online Zoom Course
