Iowa Western Community College

A commercial learner's permit (CLP) is a permit that only authorizes you to practice on public roads with a qualified CDL holder sitting next to you. 
The CLP test is broken down into three sections:
•    General knowledge
•    Air brakes
•    Combination vehicles
This online course will prepare you to take the General knowledge test to obtain your CLP.

The Iowa Driver Improvement (DIP) will examine attitudes and behavior in relation to driving. It will focus on teaching drivers how their behind the wheel attitude affects their driving behavior. Its purpose is to give participants an opportunity to reflect on their driving behavior and make a commitment to positively alter their daily driving experience. Please note, cancellations must follow IWCC Policy. If not followed, a rescheduling fee will be applied.

This program requires a MANDATORY parent & student orientation held one week prior to the start of class. Attendance at orientation is required to participate in the course.

Students need 20 logged Behind the Wheel hours before starting the course.

The program will include online & classroom instruction & behind-the-wheel (BTW) training. The instructor will have detailed instructions on accessing the online coursework & scheduling driving sessions at orientation.

Please register using your child’s first and last name; however, enter the parent/guardian’s email address & phone number. Iowa Western can only communicate directly with parents/guardians and is not permitted to communicate with students.

After completing the online portion of the course, students have 45 days to complete six (6) behind-the-wheel driving sessions with the instructor.

January 19, 2027, from 8am-4:30pm

This comprehensive program includes all Level 1 & 2 topics and expands into land surveying, grade control, construction drawings, excavation math, and operation of additional equipment. Students will train on skid steers, excavators, wheel loaders, dozers, backhoes, and motor graders. Students receive classroom instruction, immersive simulator training using the CM Labs Advantage simulator, and supervised field practice on actual equipment.
The program includes two full weeks—or 80 hours—of supervised field training focused on realistic construction projects and operator proficiency. 
 

Jan 25 – Feb 25 Monday–Thursday, 8am – 1pm (5 Weeks)

Iowa Western’s Heavy Equipment Operator Level 1 course prepares students for entry-level employment in construction, excavation, landscaping, utilities, agriculture, and related industries. Students receive classroom instruction, immersive simulator training using the CM Labs Advantage simulator, and supervised practice on actual equipment.

Training emphasizes job-site safety, equipment inspections, soil identification, basic earthmoving principles, and safe operation of skid steers, excavators, and wheel loaders. 

Saturday, February 6, 2027
This class meets on Saturdays from 8:00am-4:30pm. The Iowa Driver Improvement (DIP) will examine attitudes and behavior in relation to driving.
